Founder’s Domain Checklist: Prep Your Domains Before Q4

Q4 is when many small businesses generate the bulk of their annual revenue, and it’s also the period when teams are busiest and least able to respond to unexpected outages. A quick, ten-minute review of your domains and certificates now can prevent a disruptive outage during peak sales days. Taking a few practical steps in September or early October reduces the risk of losing customers, sales, or reputation in November and December.

What to check before Q4 hits

  • Renewal dates. Verify your domain registration and hosting renewal dates now and confirm none expire between today and January. If a domain lapses during your busiest season, your website and company email can go offline immediately, even if the registrar offers a short grace period. In some cases, the name may be released and claimed by someone else shortly after expiration. Be cautious about renewal notices that look official but aren’t; scammers sometimes send fake invoices that mimic real registrars to trick busy teams into paying fraudulent charges.
  • WHOIS and contact information. Make sure the registrant and administrative contact details are current and monitored. If renewal notices go to a former employee or an unmonitored address, you might not see them until it’s too late. Registry systems and contact formats have evolved in recent years, so check that organization names, admin contacts, and recovery emails are accurate and reachable, not just present on record.
  • SSL/TLS certificate expiration. An expired SSL/TLS certificate causes browser warnings that scare away customers and break trust during checkout. Certificate lifespans have shortened industry-wide, and renewal intervals that worked in the past can now be too long. Confirm certificate validity for all domains and subdomains used in public-facing services, such as your website, checkout pages, APIs, and any customer portals, and set reminders well ahead of expiry.
  • DNS redundancy and configuration. Running DNS with a single provider creates a single point of failure: if that provider experiences an outage, your site can disappear entirely. Use redundant DNS providers or secondary name services where practical, and verify records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT, and any service-specific entries) are correct. Double-check email routing, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC settings so customer messages and transactional emails keep flowing during high-demand periods.
  • Domain transfer and registry locks. Ensure transfer lock is enabled on all critical domains. Transfer locks prevent casual or automated transfers away from your registrar, and registry-level locks add an additional, manual verification step for transfers. During peak seasons, attackers often take advantage of distracted teams, so having both transfer and registry protections in place reduces risk and gives you time to detect and respond to suspicious activity.

Why this is worth doing now, not in November

Each of the checks above takes just minutes to perform when done proactively. If any issue appears during a peak sales day, fixing it can take hours and may cost you a full day of revenue or more. By scheduling a short maintenance window before the holiday rush, you avoid last-minute firefighting and reduce the chance of costly interruptions. The early autumn window gives founders and IT teams the bandwidth to act calmly and thoroughly.

What to do next

Block a short slot this week to run through the five checks listed above. Create a simple checklist: confirm renewal dates, update contact records, verify certificate validity, check DNS redundancy and records, and ensure locks are enabled. If any item looks unfamiliar or you can’t locate the right control panels, that’s a clear sign to get a specialist or vendor to help — a quick expert review can be far cheaper than lost sales during Q4.

Get your domains Q4-ready. A focused review of renewal dates, DNS configuration, certificate lifespans, and lock status can be completed in one session and will drastically reduce the chance of an avoidable outage during your busiest months.
